If a person likes working directly with people, is artistic, enjoys working with his or her hands demonstrating creativity, and wants a job with responsibility, a career in cosmetology may be an excellent choice!

The Cosmetology program prepares students to sit for the state exam to become licensed to work in the area of hair, skin and/or nail care. Many licensed graduates become salon owners and successful entrepreneurs.
Program Highlights
The duties of a cosmetologist are varied and comprehensive, requiring both interpersonal and technical skills along with artistic talents.  Some specific tasks cosmetologists may perform are hair styling, hair cutting, hair coloring or lightening, manicuring & sculptures/tips, pedicuring, facial services, servicing hairpieces, permanent waving, shampooing & scalp care, relaxer applications, identification of specific diseases and disorders, and clientele relationship building.

Career Opportunities
Cosmetology graduates can find employment in the following areas...
  • Barber
  • Hair Stylist
  • Nail Technician
  • Skin care specialists or Estheticians
  • Electrologists
  • Shampooers
Industry Overview
Overall employment of barbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers generally should be good. Opportunities will be best for those licensed to provide a broad range of services.

Employment of hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists should grow as many now cut and style both men’s and women’s hair and because the demand for coloring services and other hair treatments, such as permanent waves, by teens and aging baby boomers is expected to remain steady or even grow.

Continued growth in the number of nail salons and full-service day spas will generate numerous job openings for manicurists, pedicurists, skin care specialists, and shampooers. Nail salons specialize in providing manicures and pedicures. Day spas typically provide a full range of services, including beauty wraps, manicures and pedicures, facials, and massages.
