Phlebotomy Technician
Course Description:
The 80-hour class is comprised of classroom and hands-on instruction.
In order to sit for the certification test, students must have completed a minimum of 25 successful venipunctures and 5 capillary punctures. Students will be expected to practice venipunctures on one another and on guests they invite to class who have completed a waiver form.
Students will learn to:
• Prepare and inform patients for venipuncture.
• Identify the OSHA safety precautions that must be followed.
• Explain the order of the draw for the vacuum tube and butterfly methods.
• Describe the guidelines for use of evacuated tubes.
• Identify possible problems during a venipuncture.
• Define the phlebotomist’s role in collecting and transporting specimens.
• Maintain collection equipment.
• Identify tube additives and their actions.
• List sites for venipuncture, capillary and arterial puncture.
The curriculum includes:
• 20 hours of anatomy & physiology and medical terminology.
• 60 hours of phlebotomy instruction.
Program Schedule:
The class generally meets two nights a week, three hours each evening,
for 27 consecutive sessions. Check the most recent brochure for the current dates and times.
Requirements:
• Submit the $60 non-refundable application fee before orientation.
• Attend a WorkKeys / Orientation session.
• Begin Hepatitis B Immunization series before attending class.
• Provide proof of a recent two-step mantoux (TB test).
• Wear scrubs, lab coat and appropriate shoes to class.

Upon completion:
Following successful completion of all course requirements, students will be eligible to sit for a nationally recognized credentialing exam for an additional fee.
